What are regulated qualifications?

Regulated qualifications are nationally recognised and provide a guarantee of quality, validity and consistency in content, delivery, assessment and quality assurance. The qualifications are regulated in the UK and awarded by First Aid Awards. FAA are an Awarding Organisation regulated by Ofqual and SQA Accreditation. The qualification sits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). Which Course Do I Need?

Check out the individual courses on offer for more details and choose the best one for your individual or company’s needs.

Please get in touch if you are unsure about which course to choose.

How long are certificates valid for?

The qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement. It is strongly recommended by the Health and Safety Executive that the learner attends annual refresher training. The learner will need to complete the full course again to requalify for a further three years. On expiry of the qualification the HSE guidance states that the First Aider is no longer considered competent to act as a First Aider in the workplace. It is prudent to arrange requalification before expiry to ensure that a workplace is not left with a shortfall of qualified First Aiders.

What is the FAA?

First Aid Awards (FAA), as an awarding organisation, is regulated by Ofqual and SQA Accreditation and must demonstrate ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements through audits and monitoring.

An FAA centre as a training provider, delivers Ofqual and SQA Accreditation regulated/accredited qualifications. FAA are responsible for centre compliance which is monitored by FAA external quality assurance procedures.

An FAA centre is responsible for the compliance and competence of their registered trainer/assessors which is checked through internal quality assurance.

FAA qualifications must be delivered and assessed by a registered trainer/assessor who is aware of the qualification specification and all FAA requirements, guidance and relevant policies.

FAA qualifications have set learning outcomes and assessment criteria. The learning outcomes describe the skills and knowledge a learner will gain by successfully completing the qualification. The assessment criteria state the skills, knowledge, and competence a learner will be required to demonstrate during assessment.

What is Ofqual/SQA Accreditation?

The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England.

Under Scottish Government legislation, SQA Accreditation quality assures qualifications offered in Scotland by approving awarding bodies and accrediting their qualifications. This is done by regulating awarding bodies and their qualifications against published regulatory requirements.

All of these qualifications are recognised on: Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) – Scotland. Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) – rest of the United Kingdom. European Qualifications Framework (EQF) – Europe.

Why is Ofqual/SQA Important?

Employers are legally accountable for the quality and type of training chosen. Ofqual accredited courses automatically meet these requirements.

What are the benefits of Ofqual/SQA?

  1. Quality Assurance: Maintains qualification and assessment standards.
  2. Credibility: Qualifications are recognised and respected.
